Great Sand Sea : Nature
Between the Gilf Kebir and ٍSiwa Oasis lies the awe-inspiring immensity of dune fields that the German explorer Gerhard Rohlfs aptly named the Great Sand Sea (Bahr al-Raml). Covering a colossal 72 000 square kilometers (27 800 square miles)—approximately the size of Ireland—the Great Sand Sea extends for an average of 650 kilometers (404 miles) from north to south and 300 kilometers (187 miles) from east to west. The Great Sand Sea is home to some of the largest dunes in the world, measuring sometimes more than 100 meters (328 feet) in height and as much as 150 kilometers (93 miles) in length.
