Valley of the Golden Mummies : Nature
Six km away from Bawati stands one of the world’s most spectacular necropolis. The valley of Golden Mummies is the place where you will be awed by the majesty of history. The site dates to Greco-Roman Egypt, where the ruins of a temple to Alexander the Great can be found. It is believed by some Egyptologists that the Greek conqueror passed through Bahariya while returning from the oracle of Amon at Siwa Oasis. Excavations of the Greco-Roman necropolis known as the Valley of the Golden Mummies began in 1996. Approximately thirty-four tombs have been excavated from this area so far.
In 1996, more than 100 Graeco-Roman mummies were unearthed and radar has
revealed more than 10 000 mummies in what has come to known as the
Valley of Golden Mummies. Lavishly gilded and beautifully decorated, the
mummies are extremely well preserved.
